Wilkes-Barre Invitational

The Jim Crossin Invitational (formerly known as the Wilkes-Barre Invitational) took place at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium on Saturday May 2.

Ashlee Ward was the lone Mohawk winner in Saturday's events while Mikhail McCalla captured third place in the long jump. Ashlee's throw of 122' broke a record that has stood for 5 years, held by Rose Morgans.

For most of the athletes, this was a very new experience. Only 2 of the fourteen athletes who competed had any experience in a meet of this magnitude. Six freshman gallantly competed against competitors that had 5x as much meet experience. Although none of them placed, the experience gained will help them in their careers.

Team, the season is almost over. Let's keep pushing ahead and finish strong.

Varsity Meet vs Holy Redeemer

Seniors skip their last 10 meters, a one year old high jump record falls and the boys and girls from E.L. Meyers, who semi-hosted Holy Ridic..Redeemer, fell 87-54 and 87-59 respectively.

Before the meet even began, seniors Mikhail McCalla, Krystine Patterson, Tony Place, Henock Beauvoir and Stephanie Gorney got their well deserved rounds of applause as their careers on this track team approached an end. A little biography of the student athletes was read, pictures were taken, memories were made and a fun time was had by all.

HR rolled in very deep and very talented. They captured 10 out of 18 first place finishes on both the boys and girls side but the Mohawks made them earn every point.

Mohawk boys swept all three relays and won the high jump (Anderson), long jump (McCalla), 300m hurdles (Waiters) and 400m Dash (Sharksnas).

The Lady Mohawks obtained victories in the 3200m Relay, Pole Vault (McNeill), 400m Dash (S.Moses), Javelin (Wolsieffer), shot put, discus and high jump (Ward).

Ashlee Ward, who holds the title of Meyers High Jump champion of the World, broke her own record by jumping a height of 5'6". Ashlee is a tremendously hard worker and it is seen in her performances on the track and in the field. Literally and figuratively, the sky is the limit for her.

I am not a fan of moral victories because I am a fan of actual victories, but there are times when a moral victory keeps a team focused on a goal. This was a moral victory...let's keep this thing rollin'.

Varsity Meet vs GAR

The GAR-Meyers rivalry has added another chapter to its storied history. Regardless of the activity, be it basketball or debate, chess or football, 52 pick-up or track & field we love to beat them and we hate to lose to them.

Unfortunately, the Grenadiers, despite their relatively low numbers produced a gutsy victory over a scrappy Mohawk team. With a score of 88-58, GAR produced 14 impressive wins behind a strong group of athletes. Bright spots for the Mohawks were Mikhail McCalla's victories in the long and triple jump as well as Josh Berman's vertical assault of the pole vault. Alex Sharksnas tallied a victory in the 400 while picking up a personal record.

As for the Lady Mohawks...two words, Total Domination. The girls were able to pull off a feat that is rarely ever seen; prevent the other team from scoring a single point. The girls scored 144 out of a possible 150 points producing one of the most lopsided victories in the history of this program. In fact, the girls are still scoring on the Grenadiers as I write this post. Way to go ladies.

Boys: Remember this day. File it away. Let's put 140 on 'em next year.

Varsity Meet vs Lake Lehman

Nothing could not stop the Mohawk Boys Track Team from charging their way to a 2nd straight victory. Not even the rain.

This epic battle with the Lake Lehman Black Knights has been a long time coming. Twice this meet was postponed due to inclement weather. But even though it was raining, the parade of Mohawks coming in first place went on.

Contributions were made from a number of individuals. The Mohawks tallied 10 first place finishes, 8 second place finishes and 6 third place finishes. The boys team has doubled their win out put from last year (2-1) and is looking to add at least one more.

The day for the girls was not as good. The Lady Mohawks ran into a very deep, very prepared Lehman squad who won by a score of 100-30. There were some personal records achieved by to of the athletes, Kyra Wolsieffer who threw the Javelin 10 feet further than she had done before, Krystin Sheets who ran the two mile 36 seconds faster than her previous time and Troy Lynn Lewis who triple jumped 32'5".

GAR on Thursday. Let's roll'em.

83rd Annual Shippensburg Invitational.

The theme of the day was Don't you Forget about the Mohawks of Elmer L. Meyers.

High Jump Champion of the World-superstar athlete extraordinaire Ashlee Ward (pictured left) took home first place honors in the high jump and a third place in the discus. When asked to comment on the days events Ashlee responded in a text; "uhh idk lol, can't wait for next year :)" Well said. Me too.

Tess Sauer, Troy Lynn Lewis, Krystine Patterson, alternate Megan Horst and Jazma Robertson fought through some interesting adversity but produced a personal best in the 400 meter relay with a time of 54.65 .

As for the "crafty" Robert Waiters. He produced a personal best in his main event; the 300 m hurdles with a time of 45.36. When asked about his performance Robert had this to say.

Meyers is making its way back to the top. Hopefully next year we take a bus full of superstar student-athletes to the 84th Annual Shippensburg invitational.

Varsity Meet vs Nanticoke

The Mohawks of E.L. Meyers High school escaped with a victory Thursday afternoon. The resiliant Nanticoke Area Trojans put forth a respectable showing but were outmatched by a young Mohawk team. The boys score of was a nail biting 77-69. The girls score was a more comfortable 100-34.

On the girls side Ashlee Ward, Troy Lynn Lewis and Tess Sauer led the way with double digit point totals 15, 14.25, and 12.5 points respectively.

On the boys side Jim Benczkowski contributed 13 points while Mikhail McCalla contributed 10.

There were some very good overall contributions from many other people. Good job in taking care of business. Both boys and girls programs improve their win-loss records to 1-1.

Back to the drawing board...bring on Lehman!

Varsity Meet vs Hanover

On a chilly, blustery afternoon the Meyers Mohawks took on the Hanover Hawkeyes at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.

While the Mohawks gave a valiant effort(boys 102-47, girls 110-46), the Hanover student-athletes proved why they are consistenly picked to contend for a division title.

Bright spots in the meet came from Mikhail McCalla who won both the triple and long jumps, securing 10 points. Jim Benczkowski scored 9 points and Robert Waiters got 8.

On the girls side, Ashlee Ward scored 9, Jillian McNeill competed illegally and scored 8 points (graduation project not completed) and Troy Lewis, Tess Sauer and Kirstie Robertson each contributed 6 points.

This is a work in progress. These student athletes will all be back next year with vengeance on their minds. Remember our individual and group goals. Hanover, we'll see you next year.

Recap: Meyers Jr High v. Wyoming Area

Meyers Jr. High boys and girls took on Wyoming Area yesterday (April 2). Although the meet ended up being a lopsided victory for the Warriors (Boys: 93-54, Girls: 105-39), we had some tremendous performances.

The day began with some good individual efforts from a number of student athletes. Points were earned in the high jump, long jump hurdles and some of the throwing events.

The day culminated with a thrilling come from behind victory in the 1600 meter relay. The quote of the day came from Joe Arnone after he anchored the final leg of the race, "Coach, I told you I hate losing."

Remember this moment and let's keep making moments like this.

Message from Coach T

The 2009 season is here! In a few days we will begin our workouts to prepare for our first meet and I hope you are as excited as I am. The new coaching staff is in place and is ready to make this one of the best years that Elmer L. Meyers has ever seen. But it won’t come easy. One of the themes for this year (a carry over from last year) is, “Don’t Get Outworked”. Everyday that we slack or don’t get the best workout possible is a day when our opponents get a leg up on us. We have a tremendous reputation to uphold! But don’t let that scare you, let it motivate you!

There is some paper work that will need to be completed before you can start working out with the team. PLEASE get that back to me as soon as you can. Don’t be a slacker and wait for the last moment (Byron)!

Make sure you’re getting to class and you’re keeping your grades up. Those things are more important than any track meet you will ever have to compete in. If you need help, let me know. I probably won’t be able to answer your calculus questions but Coach Jones and Coach O’Day are both teachers who are excellent at their occupations.

Steadfast forever…Meyers High!

Coach T.

Fitness Tips

Drink pickle and pineapple juices. The salt and vinegar in pickle juice can help muscles recover from sodium loss and decrease cramping. "If you're training on a hot day or doing intense activities, drink four to eight ounces of pickle juice 45 minutes and eight to 10 ounces of water 30 minutes before your session," says certified nutritionist and fitness trainer Majid Ali of the Healing Center in Culver City, Calif. "If your stomach can handle it, drink four to six ounces after or during your session to speed recovery." Pineapple juice can also reduce post-workout inflammation. "The bromelain [an enzyme] in pineapple juice removes lactic acid buildup in the muscles, which causes inflammation," he says. Ali recommends drinking six to 10 ounces, 30 minutes after training.
